New Media Studies
Major
NMS 101
Intro to NMS
This course is designed to give students an introduction to New Media Studies because it is such a broad department of study. Â It teaches you different fields in NMS and gives you a broad overview of the field.
NMS 140
Camera Media
This course is designed to show students the in and outs of cameras and how they operate. Â You learn different styles of film and how to use a camera to create those styles. Â You also learn care for equipment and how to handle it with care.
NMS 220
Media Prog. & Comp.
This course is designed to give students an insight into HTML and coding. Â Students are asked to create a video game along with learning the language of HTML in JAVA.
NMS 224
Video Editing
In this course students are given several video assignments to edit and cut together. Â These video assignments range anywhere from 5 seconds to 80Â minutes of footage to be cut down to what they believe the best version of it is. Â Students are also taught the language of film and how to communicate with terms only videographers in the field would use.
NMS 240
Digital Film Production
This course was designed around showing students how to operate on a film crew and gives them the opportunity to act as a member of a film crew for an entire semester. Â I was both a visual affects director along with producer for two different short films that were both submitted to film festivals.
NMS 280
Interactive Storytelling
This course shows students the ins and outs of storytelling in multiple different mediums. Â I learned how to communicate stories in table top RPG's and how those stories are translated different depending on the medium they are in.

Digital Rhetoric
Digital Rhetoric teaches students how to communicate across a digital platform of their choosing. Â Students are asked to create a project that makes an impact in some digital form of their choice and try different things to see how it is affected online. Â I created a makeup video blog on YouTube.
NMS 280.03
Live Broadcasting
This course teaches students how to live stream events and gives them a hands on look at how events are broadcasted on professional and semi-professional levels. Â I had to broadcast several sporting events on Alma College's campus and create a dialog about it in class.
NMS 310
Social Media
In this course students were presented with a service learning project that involved Eightcap Community Services. Â Students then were broken into several groups to act as a marketing department and created branding materials for each division of their company. Â I was in charge of their Social Media presence and created several accounts for each of their services they provide for the community.
NMS 380
Arts United Promotion
In this class, students were presented with a service learning project with the United Way of Gratiot and Isabella County.  Students were broken into positions of a marketing department and asked to create an entire marketing campaign for Arts United, a fundraising event with Alma College that raised over $10,000 for United Way.  I was the only photography for the event and all of the materials that were made for the event.

Senior Studio
Senior Studio is the second part of the Senior Year Experience for NMS Major's. Â Students are asked to create a senior project of their choosing and make the best thing they have ever made in their field of specialization. Â I am making an online portal to connect small businesses with consumers in Frankenmuth, MI.
NMS 480
Senior Seminar
Senior Seminar is the first part of the Senior Year Experience and in this course students write a senior thesis paper and get prepared for careers after college. Â They are also exposed to opportunities to create a portfolio and professionalize their college experiences.
Art Courses
Supporting Courses for Major
Figure Drawing 1
ART 162
Figure Drawing 1 is where students are given nude models and taught basic skills to draw the nude models with ease. Â This is a studio setting where students draw for several hours under supervision of a professor and are then constructed on how to improve their skills.
Film Photography
ART 224
Film Photography teaches students the basic skills of shooting with a camera that does not give you results right away. Â It teaches students patience and how to develop photos in the dark room and expose them without the benefit of a digital screen. Â Film photography taught me how to take better photos on my digital camera because it made me think about the technical skills photography has in a different and more dynamic way.
Digital Photography
ART 225
Digital Photography teaches students different skills and techniques for shooting with a digital camera. Â I had several design projects where I would go out and shoot for several hours and then used Adobe programs to develop and edit my photos in a new and dynamic way.
Photography 2
ART 324
Photography 2 was an independent study I did with my professor to connect what I learned in Film Photography and Digital Photography to implement new ideas and grow my portfolio.  I also used old style cameras and studied the theory behind photography.
Communication Courses
Minor
COM 101
Human Communication
In this course, students learn the basic ins and outs of communication and the timeline of how it became to be what it is today. Â I learned the basics of my COM minor and how it affects not only my life, but others around me.
COM 110
Media Systems and Influence
In this course, I connected both my major and my minor together in a very basic and technical way. Â This course shows students how to use technology to communicate in both good and bad ways. Â The class also uses real world examples to stay up to date on new trends.
COM 211
Political Communication
In this course, students learn about the political climate in the US and how political discourse can be used in advertisements and campaigns. Â Using real world examples, my professor taught us how political communication can be dangerous and it is up to us to study it and learn how to use it for the better of the society.
COM 327
Propaganda and Persuasion
Propaganda and persuasion looked at political campaigns and ads over the years and studies how it is used to persuade societies. Â We looked at WW2 propaganda and discussed how it was disseminated and used to persuade all countries involved. Â We were also asked to write several papers in discussion to topics that were discussed in class.
COM 385
Marketing Internship
My marketing internship consisted of me going off campus and taking on an internship that used both my major and my minor. Â I worked at LaVida Massage Corporate over an entire summer and ran social media accounts for 54 franchises and branded their website. Â I also was a part of creating their 2018 Christmas Campaign.
COM 399
New Media Marketing Strategies
In this Independent Study, I am working with my advisor to create a business plan for after college. Â I will be speaking with accountants, professionals in the field, and studying data and materials to determine what the best way is to create a business plan and carry it out with ease.
COM 450
Communication Theory
This is the Senior Seminar portion of the Communication department on campus. Â Every senior must take this course to graduate. Â The class included a Senior COM Perspective Paper and a portfolio. Â This course also helps prepare students for the professional world after college.

Monster Workshop
PHY 180
This course was a spring term in which students experienced horror on a different level. Â I studied what it meant to be scared and what scares people the most. Â I then created a robotic monster from scratch that was displayed on campus for the entire summer.
Writing for the Media
ENG 270
This course is designed to help students that are hoping to obtain jobs in journalism after college. Â I learned the strategies journalists use when writing articles and the demands that careers in journalism have.
